Mediating Effects of Depression on the Relationship between Parents Emotional Abuse and Adolescent School Adjustment

Abstract
Attempts are made in this article to explore the mediating effects of depression and determine the impact that emotional abuse from parents has on teenager¡¯s school life. For this purpose, out of 1402 middle and high school students, hierarchical regression analysis was performed on 460 students who had been emotionally abused by their parents in both the Chungnam province and Daejeon Metropolitan city. Primary results are summarized as follows: Firstly, emotional abuse from parents negatively impacted school life. Secondly, emotional abuse from parents positively influenced depression. Thirdly, adolescent depression negatively affected school life. Fourthly, abuse experiences acted as a mediator for adaptation to school, thus affecting depression. In short, emotional abuse mediated with depression negatively influenced adolescent school life. Therefore, emotional abuse and adaptation to school were partially mediated by depression. Taking these outcomes into consideration, practical intervention measures are discussed to prevent abuse and improve adolescent mental health.
